Floating Bed Construction
A floating bed frame creates the illusion that the bed hovers above the floor. The effect is achieved by building a two-layer frame — a wider top platform and a narrower, inset base — so the support legs are hidden from view.
Core Design Principle
The floating illusion relies on one simple trick: the bottom frame is ~12 inches (30 cm) shorter on the sides and front than the top frame. The support legs sit on this smaller base, positioned well inside the perimeter. From any standing angle, the legs are invisible.
- Top frame: Matches mattress dimensions exactly (e.g., queen: 60" × 80")
- Bottom frame: 12" shorter on both sides and foot; same dimensions at the head
- Legs: Inset blocks of solid wood, centered on the bottom frame

Construction Process
1. Cut Lumber to Size
Dimensions depend on mattress size. Cut all pieces before assembly — use a circular saw with guide for long cuts, miter saw for cross-cuts and square ends.
2. Build Bottom Base Frame
Assemble the 2×6 base frame with pocket holes. This frame sits 12" inset from the top frame perimeter on three sides. Add cross-blocking for rigidity.
3. Build Top Frame
Assemble the 2×8 top frame upside-down to hide fasteners. Add an inner support skeleton — cross members running both horizontally and vertically to prevent sagging.
4. Connect the Layers
Attach the top frame to the bottom base using 3½" screws. Drive screws from inside the bottom frame up into the top frame supports.
5. Add Platform Surface
Attach ¾" plywood panels with 1⅝" screws. Alternatively, install slats (1×3 or 1×4 lumber) spaced evenly across the platform.
6. Attach Legs
Mount inset leg blocks to the bottom base frame. Flip the bed upright and test for wobble.
7. Finish
Fill screw holes with wood filler, sand smooth, apply edge banding to exposed plywood edges, then stain or paint.
